Attendance Procedures

Attendance is a highly important part of school and an important factor in scholarship. Learn the rules of attendance and follow them carefully.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

According to State Law, parents are responsible for the punctual and regular attendance of their children. Illness, medical appointments, and funerals are the only legal reasons for excusable absence. A written excuse from the parent or guardian must be brought to school. If a student forgets to bring a written note, he will be marked unexcused and given five days in which to bring a written note indicating that the absence was excused (unexcused absences will result in a loss of revenue for the school district). If it is not cleared in five days, it will be considered a cut.

Absences:

Normally absences fall into three categories:

1. Legal or excused absence - illness, medical appointments, court or funerals. Permit slips must be obtained to leave school.

2. Authorized, unexcused absence - work, needed at home, trips, etc.

3. Unexcused absences - no notes, ditching, cutting. When a student cuts, class work may not be made up.

Independent Study Contracts:

If a student is going to be absent for 5-15 consecutive school days for any reason they can complete an Independent Study Contract to insure that they will not miss any work or be penalized for the absence. Requests for the independent study contract must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

Procedure:

When a student is absent it should be cleared by the parent within 3 school days. Parents can call, email or send a note to school with their student.

If a student becomes ill at school, they should ask their teacher for a pass to the office. The parents will be called and asked to come and take them home.

ARRIVAL TO AND DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL:

Students who do not ride school buses are not allowed on the school grounds before 20 minutes prior to the first bell. Students not riding school buses are not to loiter at local businesses. Problems that arise in these areas become police as well as school matters. Once a student arrives at school he/she may not leave until school has been dismissed at the end of the day unless he/she checks out through the office.

At the end of the day, students must wait at the flagpole for their rides. If they are not involved in a school function, they are to leave the school grounds.

TARDIES:

Students are tardy if they are not in the class before the second bell.

"Disciplinary action is taken when a student gets three or more tardies to one class or within one week."

HOMEWORK REQUESTS:
Students who are absent from school may contact their teachers to find out about work they have missed during the absence. Staff e-mail addresses are available in the "Staff Directory" section of the Paulding website. Upon returning to school, students have one day for every day of absence to turn in missing work. If you have any questions, please contact the office at 474-3500 ext. 5727.
