Attendance Procedures
ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES
According to State Law, parents are responsible for the punctual and regular attendance of their children. Illness, medical appointments, court and funerals are the only legal reasons for excusable absence. A written excuse or phone call from the parent or guardian must be submitted to the school along with a doctor's note or court documents if applicable. If a student forgets to bring a written note, he will be marked unexcused and given three days in which to bring a written note indicating that the absence was excused (unexcused absences will result in a loss of revenue for the school district). If it is not cleared in three days, it will be considered unexcused.
ABSENCES AND HOMEWORK REQUEST INFORMATION
Normally absences fall into three categories:
-
Legal or excused absence — illness, medical appointments, religious observances, court or funerals. Permit slips must be obtained to leave school.
-
Authorized, unexcused absence — work, family emergencies, trips, etc.
-
Unexcused absences — no notes, ditching, cutting. When a student cuts, class work may not be made up and disciplinary action may be taken.
Students may request homework directly from their teachers via email. Email addresses can be found on our website.
INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACTS
If a student is going to be absent for 3-14 consecutive school days for any reason they can complete a Short Term Independent Study Contract to ensure that they will not miss work or be penalized for the absence. Contracts may be initiated HERE (online only) a minimum of 3 days prior to the student leaving. Contracts are given for a maximum of 14 days per year.
MAKE-UP POLICY FOR SCHOOL WORK
Students are allowed a reasonable amount of time to make up work. The following guidelines have been developed to help establish a uniform procedure for teachers to follow in assisting students in making up work following an absence:
-
“I” Illness or “E” Excused
-
Teachers will allow work to be made up and give student needed assistance.
-
“U” Unexcused or “A” Unverified
-
Responsibility for making up work rests entirely with the student. Teachers are to provide assignments when asked for but need not assume responsibility for assisting with make-up work. Students may be required to utilize lunch tutoring time if the student needs assistance with assignments.
-
“Z” Truancy, “T” or “W” Tardy
-
The privilege of making up work for credit may be secured only by the student making special arrangements with the teacher(s) concerned. Teachers are under no obligation to grant requests for such arrangements. Students may be required to utilize lunch tutoring time if the student needs assistance with assignments.
-
“S” or “N” Suspension or In-School Suspension
-
Responsibility for making up work rests entirely with the student. Teachers are to provide assignments when asked.
TARDIES
Students are expected to arrive to class on time and ready to learn. A parent may only excuse tardiness to the first period twice a semester. Repeated offenses warrant alternative corrective action.
